DO IT ATELIER

CALCIFER'S HEART OF EARTH

We are selected in a competition of a public art proposal to make a public at in the remote traditional village in Hong Kong.
Make use of this chance, we decided to take a deeper research to this village and proposed an experimental intervention to the village in terms of social activities and settlement maintenance.

In the movie “Howl’s moving castle”, Calcifer is the fire demon powering Howl’s castle. His magic not merely enables the castle moving around but also keeping the people in the castle away from the war zone. In our word, city is expanding rapidly while more and more villages are shrinking. Villagers of Lai Chi Wo moved to the city to make a living. Why don’t they stay and try to protect their home village from shrinking? We proposed a pottery kiln to be built in the village. Villagers can produce ceramic tiles and bricks from it for repairing their own traditional “Hakka” houses. Since clay is their local material found around their village and it doesn’t required any transportation, this organic material is their option compare with any modern material like concrete / steel. This kiln is a gesture of sustainable living style in the village instead of a symbol of rusty live.
